Бранденбургские ворота

Inspired by the propylea of the Athenian acropolis and built between 1788 and 1791 as a symbol of peace, the Brandenburg Gate is probably worldwide much better known as the symbol of the Cold War years, when the Berlin Wall was dividing Germany - and the whole world policy - into two opposite worlds.Originally part of the ancient city wall, the Brandenburg Gate belonged during the socialist regime to the Eastern part of the city and German Democratic Republic. Standing closed to the new wall, it was transformed in a heavily guarded death zone. So when at the end of the Revolutions of 1989 the Berlin Wall came to fall, the pictures of thousands of people that inundated the Brandenburg Gate area and climbed on top of the meanwhile powerless wall in front of it, became again a symbol - this time of recovered freedom and eagerly awaited reunification.
